Fit Friday

Another week of amazing runs…and crazy weather. I managed to keep my run streak going… until yesterday.

Weekend– A short run to keep the streak on Saturday, then a day at the Ice Castles with the kids and friends. Sunday Runday 11 mile run- including a PR 5 miles on the treadmill before accidentally hitting the emergency off button!
Monday– the kids were home because of icy roads. I ran inside at the YMCA
Tuesday– a huge snowstorm arrived. At 6 am the weather said 2-4 inches of snow, we ended up with 12! The neighbors were kind enough to let me use their treadmill, where I ran my fastest 2 consecutive miles ever! DAY 40 of Run Streak
Wednesday– The kids had late start to help clear up the roads from the day before. I ran outside while the Middlest was at piano. Oh how I love a good, crisp, outside run!
Thursday– Kids had no school… again… as their had been freezing rain/mix overnight and we were predicted to get another 8 inches of snow… I think we got 6. I was up plenty early and didn’t go to the Y, worked a 9 hour day, and went out to eat with my family. It was amazing, and at the time, I was content with ending my run streak as I spent an hour shoveling while Hubby ran the snow blower. When I crawled into bed, I simmered in guilt and being upset with myself.
Friday– This morning, I got up and ran my run at the Y, and am set for a 12 mile run this weekend and lots of time with extended family!

I really do feel stronger for having done a run streak, and think I’m going to dust myself off and see if I can beat my 41 day streak!

What running accomplishments did you tackle this week? Have you done a run streak before? What was your experience?

Random Thoughts

Random Thoughts Thursday

Mothere Nature needs to figure herself out! In the last 2 weeks, the kids have missed 6 days of school, had a 2 hour late start, and multiple after school activities canceled. this has ranged from freezing rain, snowstorms, and -50 degree weather. Enough already! Even the kids groaned when I told them this morning.

The treadmill is growing on me. 3 years ago, you couldn’t get me to run more than a mile on a treadmill. I did ALL of my training outside, even in negative windchills! I still love a nice, cold, outdoor run, but I’ve made it 5 miles on the treadmill in a go.

Teeth- My 11 and 6 year olds each lost a tooth this week. So much more drama from the 6 year old- she is sad a part of her body is gone, and completely disgusted by it. She still can’t look at the picture it.

Yarn- Still trying to do fun projects and see how much yarn I can use up. I think I need something new… hit me up with your favorite projects!

Runstreak– my run streak is still going thanks to my neighbors who let me use their treadmill for my fastest 2 mile run ever! I really feel like I am getting so much stronger!

Turtle training

To start out- nothing like logging on to post today’s blog post, feeling good I’ve been consistent the last half of the week, and finding out I somehow didn’t actually post the other days. Oye! Out they went.

I’m (getting) beyond excited about Ragnar Chicago! We are 5 weeks from our start. Our team signed up as the Sprinting Turtles (thanks to a random name generator) way back in December. What wouldn’t be fun about 12 people, 2 vans, 200 miles of relay?! I am team captain, and am hoping to make this fantastic for the team

A few weeks ago, a teammate had to back out for medical reasons. Yesterday, her replacement backed out. Each runner runs 3 legs of the relay. I am now looking for a runner to run 3.4 miles, 3.6 miles, then 4 miles- with 5 weeks of training. Fingers crossed for us!

On my own training- my shins are finally feeling better. I was accidentally running in my wore out running shoes as I switched to outside training, and wearing heeled shoes instead of flats. Ice, less miles, and compression socks worked like a charm.

Hubby is also on the team, and really picking up his game. That was hard when I was purposefully running less to heal my shins, but nice to stay motivated otherwise!

The weather this weekend is supposed to be horrible. I just saw we are in the 10-18″ of snow band. It’s the middle of April! Please make it stop! Of course we no longer have our gym membership, so I’m hoping the snow is less and the plows are able to get out so I can get some miles in this weekend!

What are your training woes? Have you run Ragnar before? Any tips?

TGIF

Friday is here! I am beyond excited about it, although I am feeling a bit grumpy. This was supposed to be the weekend I ran the St Louis 1/2 marathon. Although I wish I would have pushed harder, it was the right decision not to run it. The concussion and stomach bug after that both knocked me back.

This week I was able to run 6 last weekend for my last run with my gym membership. Monday I headed outside, in the start of the snowstorm, ran 2.5 miles to a Hip Hop workout class, and got a ride home from a friend.

Since Monday, my right shin has been bugging me, and I have been too afraid to run. I think it’s a tight calf, but initially I could only feel it in one spot and was worried about a stress fracture (I tend to overthink everything). On top of being afraid to run, we had a multi-day snow event with wind, hubby had a stomach bug, and last night I had an event for the Octoberfest I help plan in our town. (Really, I let my life get in the way of my running as an excuse).

Tonight I’m hoping to plug a few miles in between running kids.

May will be busy now that I’m filling in on a relay team for the Eau Claire Marathon Relay, and Ragnar Chicago.

What do you do to help get past your brain blocks in training? What are your favorite late winter/early spring running tips?

Where I’m at Wednesday

Yesterday was a snow-day and I only had my niece for daycare kids. As lay awake before 5am, wondering if there was going to be school, I started to think about all of the things I could finish and check off my list.

Turns out my kids all played wonderfully, but my niece was a handful (18 months old, who would have guessed she’d be a handful?). When there is a house full of other kids, she is distracted and I can SOMETIMES get something accomplished. Not yesterday!

To top it off, I spent nap time blowing off a layer of snow before more heavy stuff came down and he winds picked up. All in all, the weather was not as bad as expected.

I did manage to make a little progress on a few different projects though!

I took apart the seams on my moms poncho so I can close up the neck a bit.

I finished the last couple pieces of Chameleon. Now to see him together!

Edged 1 of 3 receiving blankets.

Finally- I cut out all of he letters for the banner I was asked to make for A’s school music program. Maybe today the glue gun will make an appearance!

Ok- I guess I really did get a fair amount done (even if I did all of that over 16hours)

What projects are you trying to finish? Did you get snow yesterday too? How many of you are ready for spring?

Fitness Friday

Another busy week with a few runs on he track and a bunch of days of Jillian. Nothing super exciting about the runs- I really am getting soft in my old age. I slog my miles out on the treadmill or track, but can’t wait to run outside again. There isn’t much holding me back, except for the fact I can run inside and not worry about breaking a hip in the dark on slick roads and sidewalks. I have been using more Aaptiv outdoor workouts, inside on the track. It sure helps the laps go faster, or at least less noticeably.

This morning was Day 10 of the 30 day shred. I have competed 8/10 workouts in this time. I need to go buy some hand weights. I am definitely stronger than last time I did this, and this is the first time I’ve done it consistently. The body resistance of moving my hands without weights isn’t doing much any more. I guess that is a win!

Honestly- trying to do this every single day while running 4ish days a week is exhausting. I’m going to stick with it, but don’t feel bad taking a day off if I have to. I guess it’s all part of being a mother runner and trying to fit it all in!

This morning was a run and Jillian so I can take the kids to a local sports center to run and burn off some crazy. Tonight Hubby and I get to join up with some of our Ragnar team so we can all meet and make a few decisions!

Life, Running

Running, or not

I’m not sure what happened this week, I wrote a post on Wednesday and when I wen to post it, BAM! it was gone. I still am not sure where in cyber world it went. Yesterday was when I noticed it really wasn’t posted, looked for it, tried to re-write it to post yesterday- computer locked up three times and I just had to walk away. Today, I decided the topic at had must be different, the universe (or my computer) just didn’t think we should talk about crochet edge blankets this week… maybe another time.

Today I really want to talk about running. It’s been a bit since I’ve had a running post. I’ve made a few decisions this week as well. First- I won’t be running the St. Louis Half Marathon this year. My heart hasn’t been in full out half marathon training, and I just don’t wan to pay for a race I’m not trained for. I also decided not to go, because I am taking an exceptional amount of days (not really, but more than I usually do) off this half of the school year, and feel bad putting my daycare families into a spot where they need to find coverage or take the day off.

I am still all in excited about Ragnar Chicago! I haven’t been running as far as I would like, but I have been running 2-3 miles 3-4 times a week. On Sunday I headed out for what I intended to be a 4 mile run, but I guess I am faster than I used to be, my run ended up being just over 5 miles. I use an app call Aaptive that has workouts with music and the trainers tell you what to do. These workouts are nice when I want to do some speed work, because the trainer tells me when to go fast and when to recover. I used their Half Marathon plan for my last half marathon and was happy with my 2:09 for my first ever half!

We had a big snowstorm on Monday, my workout was shoveling for the next two days, then I was able to head out and run outside again!  My runs since Sunday have been back in the 2 mile range as my SIL and her husband both tested positive for Influenza and I watch their daughter who ended up feverish and lethargic Saturday-Tuesday. I really really really don’t want to get influenza. I have been taking vitamin C, lots and lots of fluids, go to bed early so I don’t get wore out, and keeping my runs low key and a little shorter. So far so good!

What are your favorite ways to stay healthy? Any other great running apps out there? How do you stay motivated?
