Turtle training

To start out- nothing like logging on to post today’s blog post, feeling good I’ve been consistent the last half of the week, and finding out I somehow didn’t actually post the other days. Oye! Out they went.

I’m (getting) beyond excited about Ragnar Chicago! We are 5 weeks from our start. Our team signed up as the Sprinting Turtles (thanks to a random name generator) way back in December. What wouldn’t be fun about 12 people, 2 vans, 200 miles of relay?! I am team captain, and am hoping to make this fantastic for the team

A few weeks ago, a teammate had to back out for medical reasons. Yesterday, her replacement backed out. Each runner runs 3 legs of the relay. I am now looking for a runner to run 3.4 miles, 3.6 miles, then 4 miles- with 5 weeks of training. Fingers crossed for us!

On my own training- my shins are finally feeling better. I was accidentally running in my wore out running shoes as I switched to outside training, and wearing heeled shoes instead of flats. Ice, less miles, and compression socks worked like a charm.

Hubby is also on the team, and really picking up his game. That was hard when I was purposefully running less to heal my shins, but nice to stay motivated otherwise!

The weather this weekend is supposed to be horrible. I just saw we are in the 10-18″ of snow band. It’s the middle of April! Please make it stop! Of course we no longer have our gym membership, so I’m hoping the snow is less and the plows are able to get out so I can get some miles in this weekend!

What are your training woes? Have you run Ragnar before? Any tips?

TGIF

Friday is here! I am beyond excited about it, although I am feeling a bit grumpy. This was supposed to be the weekend I ran the St Louis 1/2 marathon. Although I wish I would have pushed harder, it was the right decision not to run it. The concussion and stomach bug after that both knocked me back.

This week I was able to run 6 last weekend for my last run with my gym membership. Monday I headed outside, in the start of the snowstorm, ran 2.5 miles to a Hip Hop workout class, and got a ride home from a friend.

Since Monday, my right shin has been bugging me, and I have been too afraid to run. I think it’s a tight calf, but initially I could only feel it in one spot and was worried about a stress fracture (I tend to overthink everything). On top of being afraid to run, we had a multi-day snow event with wind, hubby had a stomach bug, and last night I had an event for the Octoberfest I help plan in our town. (Really, I let my life get in the way of my running as an excuse).

Tonight I’m hoping to plug a few miles in between running kids.

May will be busy now that I’m filling in on a relay team for the Eau Claire Marathon Relay, and Ragnar Chicago.

What do you do to help get past your brain blocks in training? What are your favorite late winter/early spring running tips?

Return to reality

Oh, a week in the sun, sand everywhere, and waves galore! Vacation was wonderful! Now I need to get back in the swing of everything!

I was happy to be able to run outside on vacation a few times, and even managed a run on the beach one morning. The beach run was a struggle- I was barefoot and it was 15-20 mph winds coming off the ocean. I’m happy to say I’ve run on the beach, but probably won’t do it again!

Laundry is almost caught up, groceries are purchased, daycare kids are back and we are all readjusting!

While on vacation, I managed to finish my campfire blanketshawl. It is pretty, but probably very impractical. I started my Chameleon and am hoping to finish it soon!

If the kids request one, I’ll make them their own shawl, but I’m not sure I want to make 3 more!

A downside to vacation was realizing a customers order had been lost by USPS and trying to fix the problem while not at home.

WIP Wednesday

Yesterday was amazingly productive! I was able to edge two toddler size blankets, and get half way through a larger blanket. I still have three more toddler size blankets to edge. Although I had high hopes of working on these today, I realize the blanket in progress, is in the back seat of my husband’s car with the hook I need.

I also finished painting the master bedroom. I should probably decorate it once. 4 years ago I made the duvet cover, and curtains, but that was as Dara’s I made it. We had an electrical fire 20 months ago, and just finished the patch and texturing of the wall that was damaged. I wasn’t sold on the color as I painted, but I’m liking it more and more.

I also made it to the gym to run sprints and ride bike last night. Tonight I need to stay home and work on packing! And cleaning! There is better worse than coming home from trip and your house is nice and clean!

Frantic Friday

Well, it’s apparently been one of those weeks! After being sick on Monday and having to cancel daycare 40 min before kids started showing up, then recovering slowly, I am apparently all thrown off!

I made it to the gym on Wednesday with hopes of getting 2 miles in- I made it 3! And managed some stairs, crunches and push ups (out Y does a fun March Madness bingo and I’m determined to earn a new T-shirt…).

Yesterday I posted a WIP Wednesday post- I honestly thought it was Wednesday until about 2pm!

N has a mild concussion, I think, after getting hit in the face with a bad-mitten Raquet during Phy Ed on Tuesday. She got an immediate black eye. She is not happy with having to take it easy and that makes life even harder on the rest of us!

Hubby has been working on repairing our bedroom wall that was damaged in an electrical fire a year and a half ago. Our room is in shambles with all of the furniture covered in plastic. This as sent us to the guest room and sharing a full size bed. We WILL be getting. A new mattress for our bed in the next 6 months and the guests will get upgraded to our old queen mattress.

He told me last night I should write a book. I apparently make him laugh with my stories of waking up mad because he left me in my dream, hen being panicked because these are the types of dreams I have when I’m pregnant… I’m not, but there was an hour of worry at 4:30 am a few nights ago.

Today I’m rocking my new dinosaur shirt- when you daycare toddler boys, you need a dino shirt! This makes me smile and smile and smile!

I’m really hoping to get a few things done today so the weekend can be fun and preparation for vacation!

Did anyone else have one of “those” weeks? Who has fun plans for the weekend? Any tips for a 24 hour drive with kids?

Better and busy

Update on a few things:

  • After struggling for a large part of last week to be a mom and work, the concussion fog finally lifted sometime Thursday.  I still had to take it easy or I would get sleepy, foggy, and a headache. I have to say that the worst part of the concussion recovery, was as I was less foggy and realized just how much stuff I “should” be doing, but it would exhaust me or make me feel worse. Today is a Monday, and I feel rested and ready to tackle the world! I’m sure it helps I have Friday off to go visit friends for the weekend with the littles.
  • February Pantry Bail Out
    • Today I need to make it to the grocery store as we are out of fruits, veggies and milk. I have only spent less than $15 on groceries, but darling Hubby came home with some food last week, but won’t give me the receipt. Most of it was snacks for his desk, so I’m going to just say $30 there. That means if I can only spend $100 and make it until mid next week, I will have met my Pantry Challenge.  After I felt better last week, I was able to slowly organize our chest freezer and found sooo much fish, and other food I didn’t realize we still had. Nat is going to be so sad about the fish as she does not like it at all!
  • I have a few WIP’s that I hope to finish up this week:
    • Island Play Set (#2)- I ran out of my “sea” color and now have to go buy some and pray the “no dye lot” is close to what I already had on hand. Other than this purchase, I had all of the yarn/stuffing on hand for both sets I made. I think I might make some separate animals/island parts that people can buy separately, but am not sure I want to make a full set again just yet.
    • I need to finish my Hat by weaving in the ends 🙂 I have to say this is a very easy hat to make, and I tend to fight making hats!  I will probably work on a few more in other colors down the road!
    • I also am working on a Campfire Blanket Scarf– it is coming along nicely and was the first project I could work on as I recovered.  Once I cast on, it is just knit, knit, knit and I don’t really need to count! I am hoping to have 3-4 of these ready for my family by summer and campfire season!
  • In finishing the above projects I will have 5/18 projects done from my 18 in 2018 challenge and have made progress by using mostly yarn I had on hand so the stash is starting to dwindle!
  • My 30 Day Shred challenge was sidelined by my concussion. I was doing so well, and normally would just not go back to finishing it up. Today I will try to do a Level 1 workout, and will stop if any of my concussion symptoms return, but I will finish this time!

I also want to put a big shout out to Nat who finished her second and final gymnastics meet of the season. Unfortunately she did not qualify for the State meet, but she came within one point! After a sever sprain this summer and Achilles Tendonitis at the beginning of the season left her sidelined for half the season, she made amazing improvements. I hope that learning the lessons of listening to her body, not returning too quickly, and also knowing when to push herself will serve her well as she continues to grow up!

Just a little sorry for all the ramblings! Have a great day!

Fitness Friday

Another busy week with a few runs on he track and a bunch of days of Jillian. Nothing super exciting about the runs- I really am getting soft in my old age. I slog my miles out on the treadmill or track, but can’t wait to run outside again. There isn’t much holding me back, except for the fact I can run inside and not worry about breaking a hip in the dark on slick roads and sidewalks. I have been using more Aaptiv outdoor workouts, inside on the track. It sure helps the laps go faster, or at least less noticeably.

This morning was Day 10 of the 30 day shred. I have competed 8/10 workouts in this time. I need to go buy some hand weights. I am definitely stronger than last time I did this, and this is the first time I’ve done it consistently. The body resistance of moving my hands without weights isn’t doing much any more. I guess that is a win!

Honestly- trying to do this every single day while running 4ish days a week is exhausting. I’m going to stick with it, but don’t feel bad taking a day off if I have to. I guess it’s all part of being a mother runner and trying to fit it all in!

This morning was a run and Jillian so I can take the kids to a local sports center to run and burn off some crazy. Tonight Hubby and I get to join up with some of our Ragnar team so we can all meet and make a few decisions!
